Still alive

casta artcard
Yep, still alive & still updating. At least Blogger hasn't make any sweeping update changes that make it near-impossible to do anything other than write plain text. Here's the latest at Other Blog:

First, initial thoughts on DC Nation after the first two weeks. All points still stand, especially the branding & shorts issues (although the New Teen Titans ones have gotten better, thanksfully).

Next, the first of my Archivals, reposting stuff from here with new commentary. This one's all about my contentious relationship with the WITCH franchise from Disney.

Finally, another Archival on early cable TV. It's weirdly amazing how a service evolves sometimes.

Other blog & life updates

Hello, everyone. Been a while. I've had a family emergency, and while the aftermath is still carrying on & will be for some time, I have finally found the time to share the few updates I've managed to make to my other blog.

First, a particularly scattershot look at different trends & events in 2011.

Another response to the Top Five podcast, this time with musicals. I actually managed to stick to five this time! But I've had my folks take issue with the TV shows included, so judge for yourself.

Last & latest, conjecture on why I think Cartoon Network is trying to bury & be rid of the Ben 10 franchise. This isn't spiteful - I actually LIKE this franchise & don't like how it's apparently being burnt off.

How about how your service has deteriorated since Six Apart bought out LJ? You seem to be getting that a LOT, and frankly, I'm not surprised.

Here's a list of problems that have driven me to take anything of value away from LJ:

- CONSTANT DDoS attacks. Time Magazine gave us an explanation as to why you're constantly targetted, but you could have at least given it to us. Instead, anyone who gets status updates gets another "we're under attack again, you may or may not see this" message. It shows you just don't care - so long as you're up, that should be good enough, explanations be damned. Your users are not stupid, and we can handle an explanation.

- Catering to 7% of your userbase simply because they are based in Six Apart's home country. It's telling that most of your non-status Tweets are all in Cyrillic, since you obviously don't care if the majority of your userbase either speaks English or other Roman Alphabet languages. The lack of explanations, I'm sure, is because you don't consider the majority of your userbase to count.

- Spam has increased exponentially since the takeover. Every other post I make gets spam, usually someone rambling about Harry Potter in English & then posting a paragraph in Cyrillic that may or may not be related.

- Cutting services & quality to non-paying users. I know you need to make some concessions, but apparently all the little buyables aren't enough to balance the costs of ignoring your users. Now non-paying users can't select their userpics easily, can't comment easily, and have to tolerate pop ups & shady ads. We're not on Facebook because of that nonsense.

- Customer Service is nonexistent. Any & every complaint I've had about service following the Six Apart buy-out has NEVER received a reply. No attempt to keep paying users with non-permanent accounts from feeling ripped off by your massive amount of downtime has been made. Every single thing about your actions shows that you want to interact with your users as little as humanly possible, even dropping the art contests for the top-of-page banner.

I would gladly drop you altogether, but I've been here for a while & do not want to lose contact with my friends. But seeing how many are replying to this topic to complain about the many, many, MANY problems LJ has that you continue to ignore, I am seriously wondering if there's another way we can stay in contact that doesn't involve incompetent Russians.

Other Blog is still being updated

Yeah, it's been a couple months since I posted any of these, but here's links to the other blogs' entries.

A game review of A Witch's Tale for the DS. Because spooky-cute doesn't get the love it deserves in gaming.

Four shows that need to be cancelled like yesterday. The only good thing related to Terra Nova in any way are the incredibly snarky reviews on the AV Club. Seriously.

A salute to Batman: Brave & the Bold. It ended with Ambush Bug! Ambush Bug!!!

Thoughts on the new Precure Season. I love the design for the orange Cure.

Inspired by Major Spoilers/Top Five, 15-plus things that never should have been cancelled. Runs the gamut from TV shows to junk food and is very, very long.

Last but not least, the newest Omnicommentary. You can replace many Legion villains, but Validus ain't one of them.

I celebrate Christmas, mostly because I was raised in the Christian faith & that's just part of it. I'm sick of the whole "War on Christmas" bullshit, though, since it feels like a chance for attention whores to play the victim & ruin everyone else's good time.

I also celebrate Festivus, since any excuse to air grievances is welcome.

Originally posted by [info]issendai at WARNING: Purina pet food has started making pets ill

My coworker John told me that his cat was seriously ill--throwing up, lethargic, refusing food, dropping weight. The previously healthy 6-year-old, 15-pound cat had lost a third of her body weight over the last few months. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Blood tests were clean, and she didn't have any known illnesses. Yet she was a few days from organ failure.

That was a week ago. She's fine now. The solution was... to stop feeding her Purina cat food.

When John told me that, and said that friends of his had the same problem with their cats and Purina cat food, I looked into it. Holy shit. Take a look at the consumer complaints about Purina cat and dog food. This exact same problem has been an issue with Purina pet foods since 2007, but since this summer, the rate of complaints has picked up drastically. People who previously had no problems with Purina are reporting issues. Comment after comment sounds the same:

I've been feeding my three cats Fancy Feast canned food Chopped Grill Feast for many years. They have always devoured their meal and licked the plates clean. Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It's very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

-----

My dogs have been eating Purina Dog Chow (green bag) for about four years. They used to eat only Iams, but due to financial issues, we had to go with a cheaper brand. The last bag I purchased was about a week and a half ago. My 14 years old Labrador has vomited about 5-6 times and my German Shepherd has vomited about 4 times. Something is wrong with this food! The food has a kind of metallic smell to it. It just does not smell right. I'm taking it back to the pet store. I am changing my dogs' food, it's just not worth taking the chance to save a few dollars.

-----

We purchased a large bag of Purina One Salmon dry cat food to give to a needy pet owner. She emailed us a couple of days later ,to say that there were maggots, lots of them with what looked to be like strands or webs with more dead gnats or flies, pieces of web in the food and "shells" of gnats or flies in the bag. Cats would not eat much of the food and, fortunately, they did not get sick. The store had noticed this problem in other bags and was willing to swap out.

-----

I purchased a 34 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend dog food every three to four weeks for my two Labradors. The last bag I purchased seemed fine until I noticed a new infestation of little black bugs. Upon further inspection through the contents of the bag, I noticed clusters of white "eggs" adhered to quite a bit of the food. Some of these clusters contained larvae in the process of hatching. I immediately threw out the remaining contents of the bag but did save samples for my vet.

We went out of town last weekend and had friends dog sit for us. We originally attributed their lethargy and random vomiting to separation anxiety. Although they are doing better, I am still concerned and will be watching them closely. As stated, I saved samples of the infested dog food for our vet in the event that anything results from this issue.

-----

I recently switched to the Friskies Poultry Variety pack (32 cans) that says it must be used by August 2013 (12281789 09:31 lo61237) sku (050000454242). I have 5 cats and feeding them this food, I noticed some of them throwing up. There's nothing in it but liquids, no hair ball, no food, nothing. My cats range from 8 weeks to 13 years old.

I switched my own cats to Purina a couple of months ago, and their coats look so much better than they did on the old brand of cat food... but Buffy has started vomiting stomach liquids. Purina and Fancy Feast are off the menu. Permanently.

I have no idea why this isn't news. But if you're feeding your pets any Purina brand, please don't wait for media confirmation that something is going on. Stop feeding your pets Purina immediately.

ghoulia with book by dream_fae_land
So yeah, still alive. I'm taking time off from blogging to try and not fail Nanowrimo this year (so far, failing spectacularly). But thanks to the combo of a bank holiday & the need to do my annual clothing changeover, I had time to watch the Monster High special from back on Halloween. So here's some general notes:

- LOOOOVE Abbey. She may be tied with Ghoulia now, and naturally, I have to get a doll.

- I demand a name & doll for the minotaur guy.

- I was personally a little freaked out by one of the background vampire designs. Y'see, I've had a character in the back of my mind for some time named Clodagh, an amphibious albino hydromancer with pale skin, dark pink eyes, and dark teal hair. There was a vampire with that description, although the red & black wardrobe would mark her more as Clodagh's evil twin (she tends towards whites & teals/blues). It just took me by surprise to see such a similar color scheme, is all.

Yep, I got a new one. The old one is finicky, slow, and still running on Vista. This one is brand new, has way more space, and will run the newest version of Paint Shop Pro (which was on a discount with the bundle). Dell had a sale, and I was at the end of my patience rope, so new lappy it is.

Things I've learned:

1. I have to treat attaching this computer to the iPod is akin to having a new iPod; it synched my purchases (which is good), but I had to resubscribe to all of my podcasts & will need to copy over other stuff from the old one on another day. I now have 96 podcasts to listen to (old ones I wanted to keep on the iPod & new ones from this week), as well as the entire series of Project GeeKeR.

2. I am VERY rusty at pixel dolling. I missed doing that a lot (it's the only way I can draw, honestly), but I will have to relearn it.

3. There is no way for the default user (who is, by nature, an administrator) to turn off the password needed to start Windows 7. Pretty annoying.

Another Other Blog update list

It's been a while, and I've done a bunch of stuff on Detritus in the past month.

First, a quick look at a Jonny Quest Youtube documentary series, along with the usual ranting about how this show needs a revival. At the very least, they could release the rest of TRAJQ on DVD already.

An open letter to Paul Levitz on the obvious hints that the only character I like in his current dire Legion run is going to be made a villain, when a more obvious suspect is being glossed over by all. I am really NOT enjoying this current Legion run, and I will be dropping it; this would be the final straw, though.

Saluting Jim Henson on what should have been his 75th birthday. He's still missed.

On the (now avoided) prospect of The Simpsons being cancelled. Why, yes, the phrase "mercy killing" IS used.

From my TGWTG blog, a review of the DS game Nostalgia. First in both a series of game reviews and in archived posts from TGWTG.

Also from TGWTG, the exact moment when I got sick of the boys' club taking over action-animation. This one's amended with some notes, including the only possible thing that can make Generator Rex watchable.

The last TGWTG archival post, a look back at Bloom County. Also, the dangers of diminishing returns when you keep returning to the same well.

Finally, the second issue of Legionnaires gets its Omnicommentary. On one hand, terrible Founders' Love Triangle. On the other hand, Plaid Lad!
